Back to School: A Bambinista Guide to Starting the New School Year
Back to School: A Bambinista Guide to Starting the New School Year
There’s something about September that always feels like a fresh start. New shoes, freshly sharpened pencils, labelled water bottles and, of course, the inevitable “Mum, I’ve lost my jumper!” five minutes after leaving the house.
Whether your little one is starting school for the very first time or heading back after the summer holidays, getting ready for a new school year can feel like a lot. So, we’ve put together our Bambinista guide to making the back-to-school transition a little easier - and a lot more fun.
1. Get organised early
The back-to-school list can seem endless, so try not to leave everything until the last minute.
Make a simple checklist of everything your child needs, from school shoes and uniform to lunchboxes, water bottles and stationery. Getting the essentials sorted early means you can enjoy those last few days of the holidays without the panic of a last-minute dash to the shops.
2. Let them choose
Back-to-school shopping is much more exciting when children get a little say.
Whether it’s choosing their favourite lunchbox, picking a new backpack or deciding which colourful accessories they’d like for their school days, giving them some independence can help them feel excited about going back.
And let’s be honest - a little bit of personality never goes amiss!
3. Ease back into the routine
After weeks of late nights and lazy mornings, jumping straight back into the school routine can be a shock for everyone.
A few days before term starts, gradually bring bedtime and wake-up times forward. You can also start reintroducing those school-morning habits - getting dressed, having breakfast and packing their bag - so the first morning doesn’t come as quite such a surprise.
4. Make mornings easier
A calm morning can make a huge difference to the whole day.
Try preparing outfits the night before, packing school bags in advance and keeping breakfast simple. Having a little routine that everyone knows can take some of the pressure out of those early starts.
Our top tip? Give yourself more time than you think you need. Somehow, there is always one missing sock.
5. Talk about the year ahead
For some children, going back to school is exciting. For others, it can bring a few nerves - particularly if they’re starting somewhere new.
Talk to them about what they’re looking forward to and whether there’s anything they’re worried about. Reassure them that feeling nervous is completely normal and remind them of all the familiar things they already know about school.
Sometimes, simply knowing that they can talk to you makes all the difference.
6. Don’t forget the little things
It’s easy to focus on the big back-to-school essentials, but the little details can make school days that much easier.
A favourite water bottle, a cosy pair of socks, a personalised label or a special little accessory can add a touch of fun to the everyday.
After all, school isn’t just about being prepared - it’s about helping little ones feel confident, comfortable and ready for their next adventure.
6. Remember: after school matters too
After a busy day at school, little ones can come home feeling completely exhausted - and sometimes a little overwhelmed too.
School is full of noise, conversations, instructions, socialising, new experiences and constant stimulation. Even if they’ve had a brilliant day, their little minds may need some time to switch off and process everything that’s happened.
So, when they come through the door, don’t be surprised if they’re quiet, emotional, hungry or suddenly have very little patience. It doesn’t necessarily mean they’ve had a bad day - they may simply be overstimulated and ready to decompress.
Try keeping that first part of the afternoon calm and unhurried. A snack, some quiet time, a cuddle, a story or simply letting them play independently can give them the space they need to reset.
Not every afternoon needs to be filled with activities. Sometimes the best thing you can give your child after school is time to do absolutely nothing.
And if they don’t want to tell you all about their day straight away, that’s okay too. Give them time and let the conversation happen naturally. Often, the stories come out later - usually at bedtime, when you’re least prepared for a twenty-minute debrief!
Creating a calm after-school rhythm can help children transition from the busy world of school back into the comfort and security of home.
